This was my first handbag cake. I made it with lots of affection for my sister’s birthday. I really wanted to make that kind of cake, but I didn’t realize it would take so long. I wanted to make a special handbag cake for my beloved sister by creating something from scratch that matched her style and that would be something she would love to own. I’ll also say that, whenever I make a sculpted cake, I need to like what I am going to make, since it does influence the final outcome.
So, I drew different handbag designs before finding the one I wanted, thinking deeply of the desired shape, size, leather color and texture, as well as the decorations. Once the handbag cake design was clear, I made all the decorations (buckles, tacks, handles, zipper, label tag…). I used sugar paste for that purpose. For both the handles and the label tag I dyed some sugar paste with dark brown edible color. For the other decorations I used white sugar paste that I painted in silver after they had dried (2-3 days after modeling them). To get a better finish, bear in mind that you need to make the decorations ahead of time.
For making this handbag cake I overlapped 6 layers of vanilla cake filled with mocha SMB (Swiss meringue butter cream), my sister’s favorite flavor. I used a knife to cut the layers to the shape and design I wanted. After that, I coated the cake with SMB which helped me stick the fondant onto the cake. The cake is covered with fondant (white fondant dyed with dark brown color).
This handbag cake was a hit and a wonderful surprise for my sister. She was very excited about it. However, now that I have made more handbag cakes, I see this first cake has some flaws mainly due to my inexperience and lack of time. Nevertheless, the cake was well received, and I felt very proud of it.
