I made my second handbag cake for the birthday of my niece, Elisa, who turned 15 in May 2014. As you will see from the main ornament of the bag, she adores horses, so I decided to include a sugar detail of a horse.
Just as in the previous handbag cake, I spent some time thinking over how to make my new handbag cake design and ended up with a violet, leather-drawstring handbag with fringes and some ornaments in silver color.
Again, all the decorations were made with sugar paste ahead of time so that they could dry on time and be painted silver. These decorations were easier to make: a horse, an E letter, a zipper, and handles. I did not need to make any tacks since I still had some left from the first handbag cake.
Elisa’s handbag cake design was shorter than my sister’s, so I used only 4 layers of chocolate cake. For the filling I used white chocolate ganache. I used a knife to cut the layers to the shape and design I wanted for the drawstring handbag. After that, I coated the cake with Nutella butter cream to help me stick the dyed violet fondant onto the cake.
This time I was not in such a rush as with my first handbag cake (just a cake for the same day, hahahahah!!!). So, I could finish the details better.
Elisa really liked her cake, but her other cousins were a bit jealous and each complained: “I also want a handbag cake for my birthday!!” So, I think that I opened up a can of worms! And I have a big family, so I’ll be busy for a while!!!
